How does Frontline Plus for Dogs kill fleas?

For dogs and cats, fleas are the most common external parasite.  They thrive in warm and humid environments. Fleas typically do not do well in drier, higher altitude locations, or during colder winters.  Perhaps the expression “dog days of August” came from a slow and hot day in August when all a dog might want to do is scratch its fleas.

Here is how our flea (we’ll call her FloFlea) lives: first, she finds a nice warm and safe place on the nearest furry animal, your pet.  She burrows into the forest of fur, and then must find a food source: blood. FloFlea’s mouth parts (about the ugliest thing you will ever see) are made to bite through skin and then suck blood. Without blood, she won’t be able to lay eggs, and will die within a couple of weeks. No eggs, no future… You know how that story goes.  So…FloFlea gets blood, she lays eggs (up to 500 of them), the eggs roll out of the forest of fur and onto the floor, under the carpet, in a crack, under the bed, or just about anywhere.  The egg can go dormant in a hostile environment, or, in a nice warm environment, they can hatch in a few days…to become a larva, which is quite small and can eat just about anything, including dust. Then after a few days or a few weeks, the larva becomes a pupa, and a few more days or weeks later, the pupa metamorphoses into an adult (we’ll call him FremFlea). FremFlea can jump and travel great distances and finds the first warm furry target, your pet, and hops a ride.  FremFlea joins FloFlea and live for a while longer, biting and sucking blood.

Fleas can lead to a number of health issues for pets and for humans. The bites are irritating and somewhat painful. Common consequences for pets include flea allergy dermatitis,  anemia , tapeworm, rickettsiosis, plaque and cat scratch disease, which is transmissible to humans.  And tapeworms just are not good guests under any circumstances.

Frontline Plus for Dogs is lethal to fleas in several ways:

• It disperses to the entire skin surface of your pet and kills adult fleas
• It disrupts the flea’s developmental cycle.
